Working from original film photographs, Atkinson translates fleeting, journalistic images into vignettes that explore queer intimacy, the male gaze, and the nostalgia of California summer. Atkinson’s process involves layering oil and acrylic paint with passages of spray paint, which acts as both a mask and an erasure. The spray flattens parts of the image, tightening the composition, while allowing the brushwork elsewhere to remain loose, expressive, and gestural. This process nods to the way memory functions – subjectively with some details sharply fixed, and others that contain more emotion and fluidity.
