Experimenting several techniques and formats through different series, Sylvain Dubrunfaut articulates his work around the notion of portrait. Considering this statement, we can wonder what a painter brings to such an ancient tradition. How do one reproduce a face ? How do one represent an individual through painting ? Is there any form of accuracy in the art of portrait or does it always come with the artist’s subjectivity ?
If he always lays on bodies and gestures an eye sharpened by the observation of live models, painting is always preceded by realizing or selecting photographs and videos. Filtered by the painter’s eyes, the photographic or digital mechanism and painting itself, reality and resemblance gets distorted and one can expect a failure. However, a single look at his paintings and we understand how those tools allow instantaneity and therefore the depth of expressions, movements and points of view that gives the artworks all their interest.
Because men and women seized in photographs and videos aren’t turned into things, because the artwork is an open window on one’s ephemeral complexity more than a plane copy aspiring to get completely one self, Sylvain Dubrunfaut’s paintings make us touch the complexity of human’s soul and being. They question our relations to each other and to one self by placing us as interlocutor, viewer or even subject that can converse, observe or identify and project itself into the model. Even from the back or when the face is covered, mimetism’s importance gets replaced by realness of painted sensations and emotions.
